A winger who plays tough and hard. Has a good drive in his skating despite his rather large frame. Excellent forchecker who doesn't mind the rough stuff. Is at his best in the slot, where he's hard to move for defenders. - Erik K. Piri, EP
Grew up in Corvallis, Oregon and moved to Westborough, Massachusetts at the age of 12. He went by his French Canadian mother's surname of LaVallée, as he thought it would appeal better while playing in the QMJHL. He used this name until he moved on to the Columbus Blue Jackets organization in 2009 and switched to Smotherman, in honour of his father who passed away in 2008.
