Herbert Hohenberger made his debut in his youth club's senior team (Villacher SV) at the age of 16 years only. In his 25-year-long career he represented seven clubs including teams in the QMJHL, AHL, IHL and DEL. In the Austrian league he appeared in 663 games scoring 554 points and collecting 1364 penalty minutes. He won the Austrian championship title five times, became German DEL champion with the Kölner Haie in the league's first season 1994/95 and also won the QMJHL's President's Cup with Hull Olympiques in 1987/88.
The Villach, AUT native represented the Austrian national team in 158 games including two Olympics and nine World Championships (A-pool). With a total of 73 points (22 goals, 51 assists) he holds the record as pointbest defender in the history of Team Austria.
Herbert Hohenberger officialy retired from hockey on April 11th, 2010, at the age of 41 years.
