- Drafted 2009, round 2 #41 overall by Dinamo Minsk in the KHL Draft |
Mikael Granlund honed his technique for years as a kid, playing on the yard with with his friends. He started playing hockey with Laser HT before joining Kärpät in 2006. As a junior, Granlund always played against opponents older than him, which further developed his game. Granlund moved from Kärpät to HIFK following a contract dispute that was eventually settled out of court. In his debut season Granlund scored 40 points in 43 SM-liiga games and was awarded as the league's top rookie.
His 2010-2011 season was interrupted by a head injury, after Granlund collided with the boards following an unsuccessful hit. Granlund eventually returned after a two-month absence that forced him to be pulled from Team Finland's roster for the World Junior Championships. In the playoffs Granlund scored 16 points in 15 games leading HIFK to the Finnish Championship before capping his season with a World Championship.
Granlund, a 2010 Minnesota Wild draft pick, decided to stay in Finland for the 2011-2012 season to complete his military service and matriculation exam.
