Captained the Providence College hockey and baseball teams, during his playing career. Before becoming a full time coach, he worked as a math teacher at Johnston High School, in his hometown in Rhode Island. Also served as a member of the Big East Conference Television Committee and NCAA Professional Sports Committee, and became a founder of the Hockey East Association; and served as Commissioner (1983-87) and had the Hockey East Championship Trophy (Lamouriello Cup) named after him in 1989. Also serves on the NHL Board of Governor's Executive Committee & member of General Managers' Steering Committee - playing a pivotal part in negotiating a settlement to the 2004-05 NHL Lockout.

Other awards/accomplishments: Inducted into Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame (1982), Lester Patrick Trophy recipient (1992), Unico National Vince Lombardi Award for Professional Sports Achievement (2000), Honourary Doctorate Degree from Providence College (2001), New Jersey Sports Hall of Fame inductee (2002), Ellis Island Medal of Honor recipient (May 2003), Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame inductee (2004), LaSalle Academy (Rhode Island) Hall of Fame (2004), and Hockey Hall of Fame inductee (in the builders' category) in November 2009 (joining the Hall of Fame with retired NHL players: Brett Hull, Brian Leetch, Luc Robitaille, and Steve Yzerman.
