Sam Bobyn, a goaltender in a recreational league, was on the Kelowna Rockets bench as an emergency backup goalie on December 3, 2014. He was slated to back up Jake Morrissey as both Jackson Whistle and Michael Herringer were injured at the time.

During the game against the Saskatoon Blades Nick Merkley hit Blades forward Nikita Soshnin near the boards, which led to a scrum between the two teams. Jake Morrissey challenged Blades goaltender Nik Amundrud to a fight. Bobyn found himself between the pipes as Morrissey was ejected from the game late in the third period. Bobyn played for 11 minutes and 20 seconds, making two saves on the two shots he faced.
