En av Grums IK:s stora profiler under stora delar av 1950-talet. Stabil back som sällan gjorde en dålig match.

Fick genom sitt jämna och starka backspel chansen i Tre Kronor tjugofem gånger. Trots att det var tal om VM-spel vid flera tillfällen för Pettersson så blev han aldrig uttagen.
Debuterade i Tre Kronor mot Finland 1/2 1953 som backkollega till klubbkamraten Stig Waller. Sverige vann matchen med 5-0 efter två mål av Björn "Lollo" Lassas och ett var av Pettersson, Karl-Erik Djusberg och Carl-Erik Andersson.
