The Cincinnati RailRiders team is a hockey curiosity. The team existed briefly when the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks was renamed and rebranded as the RailRiders after the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim opted to affiliate with the Portland Pirates.
The team was set to return for 2006-2007 but it failed to secure enough support during the dormancy in 2005-2006. The franchise was to be sold to a group of investors with the intent to relocate it to a planned arena in Tecumseh, ON, but the investors never exercised the option to buy the franchise.
The franchise was relocated from Cincinnati, OH, to Rockford, IL, when the Rockford IceHogs acquired the franchise in order to move up from the UHL to play in the AHL.
