Blues was founded in 1984 as smaller clubs Jäähonka, EPS and EJK merged. For the first 15 years the club was known as Kiekko-Espoo, before being renamed in 1999.
Kiekko-Espoo played in the II-divisioona, the 4th highest level of Finnish hockey before gaining promotion to I-divisioona in 1988. After four years in I-divisioona the team, led by future stars Jere Lehtinen and Tero Lehterä, was promoted to SM-sarja. In its first two seasons Kiekko-Espoo found itself near the bottom of the table but managed to avoid relegation.
In the 1996-1997 season the team made its first SM-liiga playoffs appearance, but was eliminated in the first round by HPK .
In 1999 the newly-renamed team moved to a new arena and lost its first game against HIFK , with the sole Blues goal being scored by Christian Ruuttu. After a series of early eliminations and disappointing results Blues finally made it past the first round of playoffs by beating Tappara four games to one. The team eventually lost to Kärpät in the semifinals without a single win. In the bronze-medal game Blues faced HPK, who won the game 7-2.
The 2007-2008 season turned out to be the best in the club's history, at that point. Blues finished the regular season in 2nd place with a record of 38 wins and 18 losses, including a 12-game winning streak. In the playoffs Blues faced both Helsinki teams. First they eliminated HIFK in five games before coming back from a 1-3 deficit against Jokerit to win the series in Game 7. The team's strong run ended in the final, where Kärpät won the championships in five games.
The following season Blues once again finished 2nd but ended up in the bronze-medal game. Blues started by eliminating Pelicans in seven games but lost to Kärpät in six. In the bronze-medal game Blues lost to KalPa 1-2. In addition to success in SM-liiga, Blues also played in the Champions Hockey League. Blues won all of its four group stage games with goaltender Bernd Brückler only conceding four goals. The team's run in the CHL ended in the semifinal after the ZSC Lions won both of the two legs with a combined score of 10-4.
The 2009-2010 season was rather disappointing for Blues and the team finished 8th in the regular season before being eliminated by Kärpät in the first playoff round but a year later Blues returned to the medals. After finishing the regular season in 9th place, Blues became the first team in SM-liiga history to make its way from the first round of the playoffs, a best-of-three series known as the "wild card round", to the semifinals, where Blues eliminated Ässät in six games.
However, Blues failed win its first championship as HIFK swept the final series and left Blues with the team's 2nd silver medal.
