HPK, or Hämeenlinnan Pallokerho, was founded in 1929 as a bandy club, before starting activities in football, Finnish baseball and ice hockey.
HPK won its first medal in 1952, when the team finished in 2nd place. Later, the team won eight bronze medals and a silver medal before winning its first Finnish championship in 2006.
Coached by future Team Finland coach Jukka Jalonen, the championship-winning team featured players like Ville Leino, Karri Rämö, Janne Lahti and Janis Sprukts. HPK finished the regular season in 3rd place before sweeping the quarterfinal series against Ilves. In the semifinals the team eliminated HIFK with 3 wins over 2 and won the championship by winning the final series 3-1 over Ässät, allowing more than one goal in only two games.
In the 1990s and 2000s HPK gained reputation as a constant bronze-medal winner. Between the 1990-1991 and 2006-2007 seasons the team won a total of eight bronze medals.
HPK is known as a solid development team, and the club has seen many of its past players find success. Former HPK players include Leino, Rämö, Lahti, Niko Kapanen, Riku Hahl, Antti Miettinen, Éric Perrin and Brian Rafalski.
