The roots of Jokerit lie in the amateur sports club of Töölön Vesa. Financial problems led to the team becoming Helsingin Jokerit in 1967 with the aim to create a second successful Helsinki-based hockey team.
Jokerit started in, which at the time was the second highest level in Finnish ice hockey. The team won its first game 7-1 against Karhu-Kissat on November 23rd 1967. After two seasons in Suomen sarja Jokerit became a top-level team in 1969. While many teams focused on becoming more physical, Jokerit based their game on high technique and smart plays. Jokerit won its first Finnish championship in 1973 to finish its fourth season in SM-sarja.
In the 1980s the club entered a darker phase with financial issues. The turning point of the club was in 1991, when board member Harry Harkimo took charge of both the ownership and the team, appointing himself to be the new chairman of the board. Harkimo developed Jokerit into one of the richest clubs in Finnish sports.
The club also became force on the ice, winning the championship in the 1991-1992 season with players like Teemu Selänne, Waltteri Immonen and Markus Ketterer.
With their improved financial situation, Jokerit acquired new players to lead the team to further on-ice success. These signings included Otakar Janecky, who became one of the club's legends and led the team's first line for several years.
The 1994-1995 season and NHL lockout saw the Jokerit roster get named the second best hockey team in the world by The Hockey News. Stars like Selänne, Janecky, Jari Kurri, Janne Niinimaa and Ari Sulander played for the team in the season that also featured an exhibition game against the Wayne Gretzky All Stars team, featuring Gretzky himself, Mark Messier, Grant Fuhr and Paul Coffey, among others. Jokerit also won the European Cup after beating Russian Lada Togliatti in the final.
At the peak of their success, Harkimo moved Jokerit to their own arena, which was built in 1997 and turned the club into a public limited company. As the dawn of the new millenium approached, Jokerit continued to bolster their lineup with star players. The team signed players like Jan Benda, Pasi Nurminen, Esa Tikkanen, Kari Lehtonen and Ville Peltonen. This has also led to the team gaining negative reputation among Finnish hockey fans, with some claiming that Harkimo's Jokerit used to "buy" their way to success.
At the end of the 2001-2002 season Jokerit won its sixth Finnish championship. After this, they have struggled to find success. The team went through a series of disappointing seasons and couldn't win another championship under the control of former NHL coaches Doug Shedden and Glen Hanlon.
For the 2010-2011 season Harkimo appointed Jarmo Kekäläinen the SM-liiga team's general manager. With his connections to the NHL and high respect in the hockey world Kekäläinen was able to sign new top players to try and lead the team back to the top. Kekäläinen's first season in charge didn't see Jokerit find any success, as the team was eliminated in the quarterfinals by fierce rival HIFK.
