A quick, technically sound goaltender who relied on positioning and reflexes rather than size. O’Neill starred at Yale University, earning All-American honors before turning pro in 1989. Drafted by Winnipeg in 1988, he appeared in 21 NHL games with the Jets and Ducks but never recorded a win, a league record for goaltenders. He spent most of his career in the AHL, IHL, and Europe, finishing with championship success in Sheffield before retiring in 2001.

Drafted 1988, 2 #15 overall by Winnipeg Jets in the NHL Supplemental Draft

O’Neill was a standout collegiate goaltender at Yale University (1985-89), earning All-ECAC First Team honours twice and becoming an AHCA East First-Team All-American in his senior year. After a season overseas in Finland with Tappara Tampere (1989-90), he returned to North America and worked through the Jets’ farm system. O’Neill played 21 games in the NHL (with the Winnipeg Jets and later the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim), recording a 0-9-2 record, which stands as an NHL record for most games played by a goaltender without a win. He spent the bulk of his career in the AHL, IHL and European leagues and finished with the Sheffield Steelers in the UK, capturing multiple domestic titles in his final season (2000-01).
