Carbonneau was selected 44th overall in 1979 after scoring 141 points with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens. He won 3 Selke Trophies and 3 Stanley Cups over his 19-year career. He was a 5x 20-goal scorer and reached the 40-point mark in 8 seasons. Carbonneau retired in 2000 with 260 goals and 663 points and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019.
