Derek Boogaard Facts
Player Type
EnforcerHeavy Hitter
Drafted
2001 round 7 #202 overall by Minnesota Wild
Brother: Aaron Boogaard

A massive and intimidating enforcer with exceptional reach, strength and punching power. Boogaard used his size and physical presence to protect teammates and deter opponents. He worked extensively on his skating, but had limited puck skills and offensive ability.

There are not too many guys I would not fight in this league. With Derek, I was genuinely scared of him.

— Brandon Prust 2011

He was definitely the biggest and toughest guy I have ever fought.

— Steve MacIntyre 2011

Every player on our team felt a little bit more safe with him on the ice with us.

— Pierre-Marc Bouchard 2011

Derek is obviously the biggest and the toughest. I think we needed that presence here.

— Glen Sather 2010

Boogey makes an impact because they are looking for him. Not to fight, but they are looking for him when he is on the ice.

— Jacques Lemaire 2007
