On May 13, 2011, Derek tragically passed away at the age of 28 from an accidental overdose of alcohol & medication while recovering from a concussion. Posthumously, it was discovered that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which along with Rick Rypien & Wade Belak - both of whom also passed away that summer.
