Penalty shootout decides outcome as Hurricanes beat Capitals

The Carolina Hurricanes hosted the Washington Capitals in a very close game. It was a draw at full-time, and still a draw at the end of overtime. But in the penalty shootout Carolina clinched it and the final score was 3-2.
Carolina's Andrei Svechnikov scored the game-winning goal.
The Hurricanes took the lead early in the first period, with a goal from Stefan Noesen. Brent Burns and Martin Necas assisted.
The Capitals tied the score 1-1 early into the second period when Dylan Strome netted one, assisted by Nick Jensen and Conor Sheary.
The Capitals made it 2-1 in the second period when Alex Ovechkin found the back of the net, assisted by Erik Gustafsson and Evgeny Kuznetsov.
Late, the Hurricanes' Andrei Svechnikov scored a goal, making the score 2-2.
The Hurricanes won the game 3-2 in the shootout. Andrei Svechnikov provided the decisive penalty shot.
Carolina improves to 6–2–1, while Washington drops to 5–4–1.
Looking at the standings, we find Carolina in first place, while Washington is fifth in the league.
