NCAA Notebook: Hobey race very much up in the air

For most of the second half to date, it's felt like no one was really pulling away in the Hobey Baker race. Some players — including Gavin McKenna — made pushes to get into that conversation, but no one who was already there has separated themselves.

So where do things stand?

Well, Quinnipiac's Ethan Wyttenbach has surged to the top of the national points leaderboard, with 41. That's one ahead of longtime favorite Max Plante of Minnesota-Duluth, but Plante has 33 percent more goals (20 vs. 15) and that usually matters in Hobey voting.

Beyond that, there are a few players tied with 38 points, mostly from teams that are unlikely to make the NCAA tournament, which also usually matters to Hobey voters. One player with 38 who is on an elite team? Michigan's TJ Hughes, who's also tied with Wyttenba
