In one weekend, Gavin McKenna reasserted his case as one of the premier players in college hockey.

On Friday, he had an eight-point night against Ohio State. It was the first time since 1987 anyone put up that many points in a single game, when Bob Joyce did it for North Dakota (6-2—8) in a game against Michigan Tech. McKenna followed up that legendary performance with two more points the next night, including the overtime game-winner.

College hockey has changed a lot since 1987, so the fact that Joyce, 21 years old at the time, is the only other player to pull off such a feat in almost four decades gives the full context to McKenna's special night.
