With Connor McDavid's potential free agency, everyone understands what he wants.

He has said many times, in public and assuredly behind the scenes, that his biggest concern in signing a contract extension that would presumably carry him into his late 30s is the ability to compete for a Stanley Cup.

Fair enough. Who wouldn't want to win it, first of all, and who more than McDavid gets the assurance that he is the person determining exactly how much money he makes for the exact number of years he wants to sign for. The Oilers — and every other team in the league, for that matter — would be happy to give him a blank check.
