The 2024-25 season did not go the way the New York Rangers hoped.

After winning the Presidents' Trophy and going to the Eastern Conference Finals, then bringing basically everyone back, there was optimism that another deep playoff run was in the cards. Instead, they had their worst season in years, missing the playoffs six points and finishing below the Detroit Red Wings. They hadn't struggled that much since Artemi Panarin, Adam Fox, and Igor Shesterkin joined the team in 2019-20.

The knock on the Rangers throughout the 2020s was that they had an elite power play, elite goaltending, and that was about it.
