Tapio Laakso was known as a hard working center. He was a good face-off taker and reliable at both ends of the ice. Laakso had very good defensive abiity and was an excellent penalty killer. He had a very high work ethic, good physique and great leadership qualities. However, Laakso was not a big offensive threat and didn't display the necessary skill set to rack up huge point totals.
