Hartland de Montarville Molson was a member of the Molson brewing family. He and his brother Thomas Henry Pentland Molson acquired the Montréal Canadiens in 1957. The ownership was transferred to J. David Molson, William A. Molson and Peter Molson B. in 1964. In 1955 he was appointed to the Canadian Senate. He retired from that position in 1993. He died on September 28, 2002.
