Dr. Eric Margenau, a New York based psychologist, invested in minor league sports, including hockey in the 1990s and 2000s through United Sports Ventures (USV). He owned an ECHL franchise in Mobile, Alabama, the Mobile Mysticks, and several UHL franchises.

Margenau sold the Mysticks to Toby Jeffreys, Tiny Simmons and David Young after three seasons. He sold the Quad City Mallards to his former USV partner, Howard Cornfield, on September 13, 2001, and the Missouri River Otters to Dale Black, Kevin Fitzpatrick and Dan O'Donnell on December 13, 2001. He also sold the Rockford IceHogs to Jim McIlroy, Jeff Smith and Kris Tumilowicz on October 23, 2002.

Outside USV, he owned the New Haven Knights that hit the ice in 2000. The UHL expansion franchise folded only after two seasons following the closure of its home arena, New Haven Coliseum. He and his wife Sara Margenau were also shareholders in Orlando Predators Entertainment that acquired an ECHL franchise, the Louisiana IceGators, on July 24, 2002, only to sell it to a local ownership group, Gator Play LLC, on May 8, 2003.

He returned to hockey, after being awarded a UHL expansion franchise in Richmond, Virginia, that became the Richmond RiverDogs. He sold this franchise to co-owner Glenn Morelli after the inaugural season, only to reacquire the franchise from Morelli the following season. The franchise folded after three seasons, coinciding with his acquisition of another UHL expansion franchise in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, that became the Chicago Hounds. He sold the Hounds to Craig Drecktrah in February 21, 2007.

The Adirondack IceHawks was also briefly owned by Margenau, when he, Morelli, Barry Melrose and Steve Levy acquired the UHL franchise from Art Shaver and Lori Shaver on January 28, 2004.
