A former Wall Street executive, Peter H. Shipman teamed up with Mario Gabelli and Lawrence Zicklin to acquired an AHL franchise, the New Haven Nighthawks from Bruce McNall, the owner of the previous NHL affiliate, the Los Angeles Kings, for $600 000 in July 1991. After operating franchise one year independently, they affiliated the franchise with the Ottawa Senators and renamed it the New Haven Senators. They sold the franchise to Bruce Firestone, the owner of the Ottawa Senators, on April 11, 1993.
Shipman was also an owner of an ECHL franchise, the Raleigh IceCaps, and statistics company, Howe Sportsdata. He died on May 3, 2009.
