Robertson was the president of the Ontario Hockey Association from 1899 to 1905. He later served in Canada's House of Commons from 1896-1900. Robertson, 76, died on May 31, 1918, in Toronto, Ont. He was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builder category in 1947. The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) championship trophy, J. Ross Robertson Cup, is named after him.
