Mark Chipman, a lawyer and businessman, ran the family business before acquiring a stake in the Minnesota Moose from Kevin MacLean, following following a relocation agreement that was approved by the IHL on December 7, 1995. He acquired MacLean's remaining 50% stake in the franchise with Crocus Investment Fund on May 15, 2001.
Chipman and David Thomson became the owners of the Winnipeg Jets, after the acquiring the Atlanta Thrashers from the Atlanta Spirit LLC, an ownership group consisting of Steve Belkin, Todd Foreman, Michael Gearon, Jr., Michael Gearon, Sr., Bruce Levenson, Ed Peskowitz, Felix Riccio, Rutherford Seydel and Beau Turner, on May 31, 2011 and relocating it to Winnipeg, Manitoba.
