Cole Caufield struck twice at Madison Square Garden to push Montreal past the Rangers 3-2 and extend their win streak to seven games. His 48th came in the second period off a Juraj Slafkovsky feed, and his 49th — his league-best 12th game-winning goal — broke a 2-2 tie with 5:05 left in regulation. Caufield now sits one back of Nathan MacKinnon for the NHL goal lead and one shy of becoming the first Canadiens player to score 50 in a season since Stéphane Richer in 1989-90.
