Jonathan Toews hasn’t played an NHL game in over two years.

If all goes according to plan, that will change soon.

The former Chicago Blackhawks captain, three-time Stanley Cup Champion, and two-time Olympic gold medalist is expected to agree to terms this month, with a contract that would officially begin on July 1, 2025.

It will mark a return that few expected after lingering health issues sidelined him following the 2022–23 season.

And as of Wednesday, sources shared that the 37-year-old has been skating in Minnesota over the last week.

Word is he has been ramping up intensity and skating regularly in preparation for what he hopes will be a full NHL season in 2025-26.

Unsurprisingly, the Wild are showing legitimate interest, particularly given Toews’ fit as a potential middle-six center with leadership upside and the club looking to add more size and experience down the middle.

Last week's signing of Brock Nelson by the Colorado Avalanche complicated the Wild’s potential plans. League sources indicated that Minnesota had quietly hoped to make a play for the Minnesota-native.

Pivoting to Toews is an interesting secondary option, but they could have difficulty landing him.

Toews represents far more projection and risk than Nelson would have, but it may be a moot point, as one source said of the situation, “Even they (Minnesota) know he’s signing in Winnipeg.”

Multiple league sources indicate that Winnipeg isn’t just the frontrunner, but the presumptive landing spot. The fit makes sense on multiple levels. Toews was born and raised in Winnipeg. He would be able to provide leadership and experience that could help stabilize a roster that sits in their contention window but has yet to push through and go on a lengthy playoff run.

While nothing is finalized, it is believed Toews will agree well before the July 1 start date. Sorting through the bonus structure and medical testing would be the final hurdles for any team, even if Winnipeg is currently the most likely destination.
