In the two World Juniors since the back-to-backs of 2022 and 2023, Team Canada has bowed out twice in the quarterfinals.

In 2024’s edition, it was a heartbreaking last-second goal that sent them packing.

Last year, it was an anemic offence, disjointed structure, several questionable roster, and a deep Czechia team that sent them home early again. Their 13 goals were tied for the fewest in Canada’s history at this tournament.

That prompted major changes in how Hockey Canada prepared and assembled its World Junior team. They moved to an 11-day training camp with a smaller group of players, nearly thrice as long as the previous year’s four-day camp. They hired Alan Millar as a full-time General Manager for their junior program.

Priorities have clearly shifted, too. No matter how the cuts shake
