Player Biography and Trivia

Drafted 1998, 1 #4 overall by Nashville Predators in the NHL Expansion Draft

Mikhail Shtalenkov came through Dynamo Moscow’s system and was one of the leading Soviet goaltenders of the early 1990s, backstopping Dynamo to three straight league titles. After winning Olympic gold with the Unified Team in 1992, he moved to North America and joined the expansion Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Calm and technically sharp, Shtalenkov served mainly as a dependable backup but proved capable when pressed into starting duty. His best NHL run came in 1997–98 when he played 40 games for Anaheim. Later stops included Nashville, Edmonton, Phoenix, and Florida before returning to Russia. Internationally, he earned Olympic gold in 1992, silver in 1998, and a World Championship in 1993. Respected for his poise and professionalism, he was among the first Russian goalies to hold a steady NHL role.
