After his debut season with CSKA Moskva, Sergej Kotov joined Krylia Sovetov in 1972. He stayed with the club for 12 years and played 446 league games scoring 177 goals for Krylia. In 1974 Kotov was part of the Team USSR and appeared in 11 international games (3 goals). After retiring from hockey in 1983, he made a comeback for 16 games in the Austrian league in the season 85/86. Later on Kotov became a successful coach on the RSL- and KHL-level.
