Michel Édouard Brière passed away on April 13, 1971 of injuries originally suffered in an automobile accident on May 15, 1970. His #21 jersey was officially retired by the Pittsburgh Penguins on January 5, 2001.

The QMJHL MVP award, Michel Briere Memorial Trophy, is named in Brière's honour.
