Sumner Murray Redstone, a media magnate, briefly owned the New York Rangers, when his company Viacom acquired Paramount Communications in 1993. The Rangers won the Stanley Cup during the Viacom ownership, but Redstone sold the Rangers' parent company Madison Square Garden Corporation to Cablevision Systems Corporation and ITT Corporation in effort to reduce the debt accrued from the Paramount takeover.
