Jan Filc was an active player, as goalie, since his eleven years. He won two bronse medals at the Junior ECH in 1971 and 1972. He played profesional hockey for 10 years, mainly in Nitra and Poprad. Hockey career ended at 31 due to different work obligations.
Ján Filc graduated as teacher in specializaton physical education and English at Comenius University in Bratislava in 1976. Later registered as coach of ice hockey. In 2002, along winning with Slovakia Gold Medal, recevied the Stefan Moyzes Award for service to Slovakia.
Jan Filc is the most prosperous coach in Slovak hockey history.
