        History

The owners of the - Columbus Cottonmouths planned to relocate the ECHL franchise to Bradenton, FL, and rename it as the Gulf Coast Swords, once a new arena had been constructed. The arena, better known as the Lakewood Arena, was expected to ready for 2005-06, but the construction was never completed. The owner of the franchise and the arena developer, Sal Diaz-Verson's DVA Sports, lacked the funds to complete the arena. The partially built arena torn down in 2009. By that time, the arena project had ran 20 million dollars in debt.
