En av svensk hockeys största backar. "Lill-Affa", som Tomas kallas efter sin pappa, fostrades i Falu IF. Valde senare att flytta till Modo som i båset hade nu avlidne mästartränaren Tommy Sandlin. Blev där redan andra säsongen i klubben svensk mästare.
Spelgeniet Tomas Jonsson flyttade efter VM 1981 i Göteborg (där han blev skadad redan i andra matchen) till USA för spel med NHL- klubben New York Islanders. I klubben fanns redan de svenska stjärnorna Anders Kallur och Stefan Persson och "Bob Nystrom. samt stjärnor som Mike Bossy, Bryan Trottier och Denis Potvin.
Inför säsongen 89/90 och med två Stanley Cup-ringar i bagaget flyttade Jonsson hem till Sverige för att avsluta med nio säsonger som spelare i Leksands IF och inleda en fin tränarkarriär som så här långt har bestått av uppdrag i Falu IF, Leksands IF, Brynäs IF, Esbjerg och som assisterande coach åt Bengt-Åke Gustafsson i Tre Kronor.
Är en av få som vunnit SM, Stanley Cup, VM och OS under sin karriär.
Bor i Sundborn.
