Holmström wasn't very good at anything. Still, he played over a thousand games in the NHL. He didn't skate well, didn't shoot well, and didn't handle the puck all that well. Yet, he was extremely valuble to the Detroit Red Wings for his unique ability to screen the opposing goaltender, especially on the powerplay where he scored half of his 243 career goals. Holmstrom was the league's number one garbage-goal scorer for ten years and was a master at deflecting shots into the net. The Swedish winger took a ton of punishment and abuse by defensemen due to his style, but never complained and played with a lot of heart and determination despite his shortcomings.
