Keith Magnuson passed away on December 15, 2003. He had just attended the funeral of former NHLer, Keith McCreary, when he and fellow former NHLer, Rob Ramage, were involved in a serious car accident. Ramage escaped with a broken leg. Magnuson would not be as lucky. He was 56 years old.
On November 12, 2008, the Chicago Blackhawks retired his #3 jersey, a long with that of Hall of Fame defenseman Pierre Pilote in a ceremony at the United Center in Chicago.
