Until January 1st, 2012, the University of North Dakota used the nickname "the Fighting Sioux". After a lengthy court battle, North Dakota's varsity athletics teams operated without an official nickname or corresponding logo until at least Jan. 1, 2015, as mandated by the North Dakota State Legislature. The team is now registered as the Fighting Hawks, a name that was chosen by the University on November 18, 2015.
