Son: Artyom Shtalenkov
Shtalenkov was a calm, positionally strong goaltender who made his name with Dynamo Moscow before moving to the NHL. He became one of the first Russian goalies to hold a steady job in the league, serving mainly as a reliable backup who could handle starter duties when needed. Not flashy, but consistent and technically sharp. Won Olympic gold in 1992 and silver in 1998.

You have to be born thick-skinned. Goalkeeper failures and lapses are always visible

Shtalenkov is more technically sound, calmer, even overly so, while Trefilov is fast and energetic, spinning around in goal like a squirrel
—Vladimir Yurzinov 1991
