Jan was killed in the plane crash of September 7, 2011 that claimed the lives of several members of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl KHL team.

A terrific offensive forward, Marek relied on his superb skating and great hands to cause havoc in the opposing team's zone. The center also posessed a very accurate and hard shot. In 2008-09, Marek led the KHL in goal scoring.
