Bautin left a promising career in the NHL to return to Europe. After two seasons with the Jets, he was traded with to the Detroit Red Wings. He never found a regular place in the Wings roster and after a brief stopover in San Jose--a single game after signing as a free agent--Bautin signed on with Lulea in Sweden. He led the Swedish league in penalty minutes in his first year, averaging almost five minutes in the box per game as the after-effects of the North American game worked their way out of his system. In the ensuing years he also played in leagues in Russia, Germany and Japan, before finishing his career back in Russia.
Bautin was a significant member of the 1992 Unified Team, with whom he won a gold medal in Albertville. He also appeared in three World championships, without winning more medals.
